Just out in November, Big
City Junk (Clarkson Potter, 242 pages)
sets city junkers straight about junking within the city limits. It's
a Big City junking spree from coast-to-coast with nine stops in between.
Starting off on the streets of New York City we find art work on trash
heaps and messages of hope chalked on the sidewalk. In the Nation's
capital there's political junk not to be believed. In Atlanta, you
mix junk food (the absolutely best bar-b-que!) with great junk at
the Lakewood Flea. In Boston, there's Harvard Yard, but not far from
it Rent Party and Justin Tyme! Go to Miami and you'll get more than
a suntan if you stroll the Lincoln Road Mall on Sundays. In Chicago,
I was overcome by all the neighborhoods that junkers can explore.
Dallas has the coolest junk and even a store called Cool Junk. San
Francisco is probably my favorite junking town. The shops are junky
and sophisticated at the same time with names like Aria, Gypsy Honeymoon,
Interieur Perdu and Therapy. In Los Angeles I learned the fine art
of "alleying" or junking in the alleys and a new spin on
Hollywood junk. One lesson learned, "If can junk it there, I
can junk it anywhere." There are other lessons, too, that city
junkers/dwellers can relate to--how to get it home, where to put it,
and of course, how to create more space for it! The big P.S. is the
Big City Junk Guide listing all! |
